A Suggestion for the Future of Bridge

I need your help.  My proposals have fallen on deaf ears as far as I can tell.  I came up with a real winner and have heard nothing from Memphis.  FedEx lives in Memphis, as does the ACBL.  Why not team up?  We need to pick some attractive college kids to be bridge spokesmodels.  (Good looking is preferable to good bridge for this group.)  They will be the FedEx Bridge Team.  Maybe they’ll learn bridge, but they will be the face of bridge to the public.  They can travel to tournaments via FedEx aircraft while getting paid as FedEx employees gaining work/study credits.  I have more to this but you get the idea.  Please comment with endorsements and maybe we can get someone’s attention!

3-Way Jacoby Super Accepts

Using a traditional Jacoby super accept in reply to a transfer bid over 1NT frequently results in a bad score.  For that reason many partnerships ban them.  But my mentor and co-author Jerry Pottier and I may have solved the problem.  See our solution at http://www.simplicitybridge.com (Scroll down to the articles.)

What’s Your Favorite Kantar Book?

Mine Is Gamesman Bridge, which isn’t at all what the title suggests.  In the book Eddie takes a student with bad bridge habits and tries to teach him proper thinking at the table.  Good thing it wasn’t me, or Eddie would have quit teaching!

Unacceptable

Ron Klinger may be a hellova guy and a superb bridge player and writer.  I’ll stipulate that.  But it is totally unacceptable that when I click on what I thought would be a cool post, akin to Bob MacKinnon’s funny doubles article, I get told I have to join another site to view the post.  Hell no.  It’s like a squeeze page, where you can’t view the post until you provide all your data.  No. Never.  Stop it.

Don’t Miss This One

Bob MacKinnon’s article (below) is a hoot.  Be sure to take a look.

This Is What Separates Good Players from Mediocre Players

No, it’s not an eidetic memory.  It’s not superb table feel.  It’s not card sense.  Those things separate Great Players from Good Players.  It’s not doing the silly things I do routinely at the bridge table.  Example.  At the club today I played the spots off the cards to bring home an impossible 3NT contract with an overtrick on an endplay.  On the very next board I failed to make 9 tricks in spades in a 2S contract because I was bound and determine to make four, having forgotten I only contracted for two (which I made, for a bottom).  Duh.  Result?  The top and the zero averaged.  Good players don’t make the dumb mistakes (very often).  We came 2nd in the event.  Imagine what could happen if I just stop making these silly unforced errors!

Sugar Daddies, Mommies Sought

Two projects need to get done, and I can’t fund them.  Therefor I’m seeking folks to help.   Here are the projects:

1.  Complete the computer game “Card Slingers.”  Funds are needed to help with production costs including student expenses and audio support for sound track (score) and voiceovers.

2.  Video production of a screen version of the 1st chapter of my new ebook Simplicity Bridge (www.simplicitybridge.com/promo.html or promo/pdf).  I have the actors (see them in my former videos at www.youtube.com/7ntxx) and can get them for a reasonable fee, but the crew and post production work will cost some serious bucks.

Here is what I propose.  Anyone can give anyone else $11,000 as a non-taxable but non-deductible gift.  (At least that’s what it was last time I looked; it may be higher now.)  Anyway, If ten people gift me $11,000 each I’ll have $110,000 to get this done, with completion target NLT April 30 2010.  The completed products will be made available to the public FREE.  Thus, there will be a fun video game teaching bridge (Card Slingers) and a video of real good looking, athletic looking kids actually learning how to play the game.  Anyone can then use these to promote the game.

Waddaya think?

Cavendish Mixup

If the pros at the Cavendish can’t figure out what direction they are supposed to sit, I don’t feel so bad about my inadequacies, lol.

Biggest Loser Surprises

Jerry and Helen take the honors.  Hope for us old fat farts, lol.  Seriously, we need to have aerobics or something at bridge tourneys.

Politics & Laws

Much has been expressed here regarding the rules, politics, and ethics of our game.  Perhaps we should do what I implore our Congress to do…  for every new rule or law, cite the specific authority.  In the case of the US, Congress MUST cite the constitutional provision (NOT THE PREAMBLE) for every law it proposes.
